AcceptedHalocard is accepted*

Halocard is accepted at Microsoft. Microsoft accepts credit cards, debit cards and PayPal on a Microsoft account, and Microsoft gift cards can be redeemed to the account. Add the card on the Payment options page at account.microsoft.com, then set it on each Microsoft 365 or Xbox Game Pass subscription under Services & subscriptions, because renewals charge the card chosen there.

*Halocard is unable to guarantee acceptance for your individual situation

While Halocard has successfully processed transactions at Microsoft, merchant acceptance can change at any time. Merchants can apply fraud and risk-based rules that prevent customers from using US-issued cards at checkout which is outside of Halocard's control. We recommend using Halocard to first make a test payment with Microsoft to confirm acceptance for your individual situation. Halocard does not provide refunds in the event your card is declined.

How to pay for Microsoft with Halocard

Limit:Advertising payments have a daily limit

Halocard allows up to 40 transactions every 24 hours with Microsoft and other advertising merchants (MCC 7311).

01

Create a card for Microsoft in Halocard

In your Halocard dashboard, create a new card, name it Microsoft and set a limit that covers what you are about to pay.

02

Add the card under Payment options

Sign in at account.microsoft.com, open Payment options and select Add a new payment method. Enter the card details and billing address. The card then shows as an option at checkout for your next purchase.

03

Set the card on your subscription

For Microsoft 365 or Xbox Game Pass, go to Services & subscriptions, find the subscription, select Manage, then Change how you pay, and choose the new card from the list.

Tips for successful payments at Microsoft

  • AcceptedTurn on recurring billing for the subscription first. Without it, Microsoft does not show Change how you pay, because the plan is already paid and ends when it expires.
  • AcceptedPay a past-due Microsoft subscription with a card or PayPal. Gift cards, subscription cards and the Microsoft account balance cannot cover it.
  • AcceptedEnter the billing name and address exactly as they appear on your Halocard.
  • AcceptedSet the card limit above the full amount, including any hold Microsoft places at checkout.

Why do Microsoft payments decline?

The card is not accepted when you add it

Check every detail, then try the postal code again with and without spaces. A card from another country needs the account's country or region changed before it can be added.

Your bank asks you to verify the payment

Some banks now require you to confirm who you are before a Microsoft payment goes through. Keep your bank and Microsoft account contact details up to date and approve the request.

A subscription is past due

Sign in to Services & subscriptions, select Pay now on the subscription, update or add a payment method, then select Next to make the payment.

PayPal payment fails

Make sure the card linked to PayPal has funds and has not expired. Microsoft only accepts PayPal accounts funded by a credit card or a confirmed bank account.

Microsoft payment FAQ

What should I do if Microsoft declines or doesn't support my card?

Pay with a Halocard instead. Microsoft accepts it, and as a US-issued Visa credit card held in US dollars it is accepted at checkouts that are strict about card type or country. Halocard is available for customers in the US and 120+ countries, so check that your country is supported, then make a card for Microsoft in minutes. See the countries Halocard supports.

Can I use a virtual card for Microsoft?

Yes. Microsoft accepts Halocard, a US-issued Visa credit card that works like a debit card. Halocard has already processed 500+ transactions at Microsoft. Make a card just for Microsoft and you are in full control: set a limit, lock it or cancel it whenever you like, without ever handing Microsoft your bank card.

How do I stop Microsoft charging me after I cancel?

The fastest way is to lock the Halocard you use for Microsoft. Halocard is a US-issued Visa credit card that gives you a separate card for each merchant, and locking one takes a couple of clicks in your Halocard dashboard. Microsoft can't charge that card again until you unlock it, so you stay in full control even when cancelling is slow or hard to find. To cancel with Microsoft as well, sign in to your Microsoft account and cancel the plan in its billing or subscription settings.

Can I keep my real card and address private from Microsoft?

Yes, with Halocard. Halocard is a US-issued Visa credit card that gives you a separate card for each merchant, so Microsoft only ever sees your Halocard, never your bank card. You choose the cardholder name and billing address on each card, so your home address stays out of Microsoft's records. If Microsoft is ever caught up in a data breach, cancel that one card and make a new one in seconds.

Does Microsoft accept PayPal?

Yes. You can add a PayPal account as a payment method on your Microsoft account, as long as it uses a credit card or a confirmed bank account as its funding source. Microsoft Store also offers PayPal Pay in 4 for purchases of $30 to $1,500 and Pay Monthly for $49 to $10,000, but not for one-time or recurring subscriptions.

What payment methods can I use for Xbox?

Xbox purchases and Xbox Game Pass are paid through your Microsoft account, so the same methods apply: a credit or debit card, PayPal, or a redeemed Microsoft gift card. To change the card on Game Pass, open Services & subscriptions, select Manage, then Change how you pay.

Can I pay Microsoft with a gift card?

Yes. Redeem a Microsoft gift card at redeem.microsoft.com to add it to your Microsoft account. Gift cards, subscription cards and the Microsoft account balance cannot be used to pay a past-due subscription, which needs a card or PayPal.

What is the Microsoft charge on my card?

Microsoft charges usually start MICROSOFT followed by the product, and in-app purchases can show the app's name, such as MICROSOFTCANDY CRUSH. Microsoft's article on investigating a billing charge lists the usual causes: a subscription with recurring billing, a purchase by a family member, a previously declined charge charged again, a pre-order or split order that shipped, or an in-app purchase.

How do I update my payment method for Microsoft 365?

Sign in to Services & subscriptions at account.microsoft.com, find Microsoft 365, select Manage and then Change how you pay. Pick a saved method or select Add a new way to pay. If Change how you pay is missing, recurring billing is off. A Microsoft 365 plan bought through Apple or Google Play is managed with that store instead.
