While Halocard has successfully processed transactions at GitHub, this isn't a guarantee of acceptance. Merchant acceptance can change at any time, and merchants can apply fraud and risk-based controls that prevent individual customers from using US-issued cards at checkout. We recommend using Halocard to make a test payment with GitHub in your own situation to confirm acceptance.

Why do GitHub payments decline?

The authorization hold was unsuccessful
The plan or trial stays inactive and the account may lock. Update your payment information under Billing & Licensing to trigger a new authorization, and the account unlocks when it succeeds.
Your saved card has expired
Open Billing & Licensing, click Payment information, click Edit, then enter the new card details and save.
A card restriction on online or recurring charges
GitHub emails the reason for the decline and tries the charge again after a few days. Check the card allows online and recurring payments, and ask the card issuer about the attempted GitHub transaction.
Your account's paid features are locked
Update the payment method under Billing & Licensing. The account unlocks once a payment is processed, which can take up to 24 hours.

GitHub payment FAQ

What should I do if GitHub declines or doesn't support my card?
Pay with a Halocard instead. GitHub accepts it, and as a US-issued Visa credit card held in US dollars it is accepted at checkouts that are strict about card type or country. Halocard is available for customers in the US and 120+ countries, so check that your country is supported, then make a card for GitHub in minutes. See the countries Halocard supports.
Can I use a virtual card for GitHub?
Yes. GitHub accepts Halocard, a US-issued Visa credit card that works like a debit card. Make a card just for GitHub and you are in full control: set a limit, lock it or cancel it whenever you like, without ever handing GitHub your bank card.
How do I stop GitHub charging me after I cancel?
The fastest way is to lock the Halocard you use for GitHub. Halocard is a US-issued Visa credit card that gives you a separate card for each merchant, and locking one takes a couple of clicks in your Halocard dashboard. GitHub can't charge that card again until you unlock it, so you stay in full control even when cancelling is slow or hard to find. To cancel with GitHub as well, sign in to your GitHub account and cancel the plan in its billing or subscription settings.
How do I try GitHub without being charged when the trial ends?
Sign up with a Halocard. Halocard is a US-issued Visa credit card that gives you a separate card for each merchant, so make one just for the GitHub trial and lock it once you have signed up. It takes a couple of clicks, and when the trial ends GitHub can't charge you, so forgetting to cancel never costs you anything. If you decide to stay, unlock the card before the trial ends.
Can I pay for GitHub Copilot with a credit card?
Yes. On a personal account Copilot Pro is $10 a month, Pro+ is $39 and Max is $100. Organizations pay $19 per user a month for Copilot Business. Each plan includes a monthly allowance of AI credits, and extra usage is billed to the payment method on your account.
Does GitHub Sponsors accept PayPal?
GitHub Sponsors takes debit or credit cards and Patreon. PayPal has not worked for sponsorships since February 23, 2023, though GitHub Pro, Copilot, Actions, Packages, storage, Codespaces and Git LFS data can still be paid with PayPal. Sponsorships share the payment method and billing date on your account.
Why is there a hold on my card after I add it to GitHub?
GitHub may place a temporary authorization hold when you add or update a payment method, start a subscription or trial, or build up significant metered usage. Depending on the card issuer it can look like a charge. If a hold lasts longer than 10 business days, contact the card issuer.
When does GitHub charge my card?
On personal and organization accounts GitHub bills on your billing date, usually the day you started a paid plan. Metered usage such as Actions and Codespaces is counted from the first to the last day of each month and billed on that billing date.
