Create a card for Instacart in Halocard
In your Halocard dashboard, create a new card, name it Instacart and set a limit that covers what you are about to pay.

Instacart accepts EBT SNAP cards at participating stores in select states, plus major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Venmo, Cash App and Klarna. EBT covers eligible groceries, and a credit or debit card on the account pays delivery and service fees, taxes, tips and other items. The card's authorization hold can exceed the order total.

While Halocard has successfully processed transactions at Instacart, merchant acceptance can change at any time. Merchants can apply fraud and risk-based rules that prevent customers from using US-issued cards at checkout which is outside of Halocard's control. We recommend using Halocard to first make a test payment with Instacart to confirm acceptance for your individual situation. Halocard does not provide refunds in the event your card is declined.
How to pay for Instacart with Halocard

Open Payment methods
On the website, click the 3 horizontal lines at the top left, then Your account settings, then Payment methods. In the app, tap the Account icon, then Settings, then Payment methods.

Add the card with its billing address
Click Add next to the card option, enter the card details and billing address, then click Continue. In the app, enter the card details and billing ZIP code, then tap Save.

Choose the card at checkout
In the Pay with section, choose the card. If it is not saved yet, select Choose a payment method, then Add payment method, enter the card and billing address and select Save.

Set the card for Instacart+
Open Your Instacart+ membership from the menu or the Account icon. Under Preferred payment method, select Change, choose the card and select Confirm payment method.

Tips for successful payments at Instacart
- AcceptedKeep the card open until the order is delivered. Added items, pricier replacements, heavier produce and tip changes after delivery can be charged after the original charge.
- AcceptedPaying with EBT SNAP? Keep a credit or debit card on the account too, for fees, bottle deposits, taxes, tips and non-eligible items.
- AcceptedPaying with an Instacart gift card? Add a credit or debit card at checkout as well, even when the gift card covers the whole order.
- AcceptedFor Instacart+, pick the card under Preferred payment method on the Your Instacart+ membership page, not only at checkout.
Why do Instacart payments decline?
The card declines when you place the order
Instacart's authorization hold can be higher than the order total. Make sure the card has enough available to cover the hold, then try again.
You can't add any more cards today
Instacart limits how many cards you can add in a day. Wait 24 hours and add the card again.
The card will not save
On a computer, switch browsers or re-enter the card, or add it in the app instead. In the app, try the website.

What should I do if Instacart declines or doesn't support my card?
Pay with a Halocard instead. Instacart accepts it, and as a US-issued Visa credit card held in US dollars it is accepted at checkouts that are strict about card type or country. Can I use a virtual card for Instacart?
Yes. Instacart accepts Halocard, a US-issued Visa credit card that works like a debit card. Make a card just for Instacart and you are in full control: set a limit, lock it or cancel it whenever you like, without ever handing Instacart your bank card.
Can I keep my real card and address private from Instacart?
Yes, with Halocard. Halocard is a US-issued Visa credit card that gives you a separate card for each merchant, so Instacart only ever sees your Halocard, never your bank card. You choose the cardholder name and billing address on each card, so your home address stays out of Instacart's records. If Instacart is ever caught up in a data breach, cancel that one card and make a new one in seconds.
How do I stop Instacart charging me after I cancel?
The fastest way is to lock the Halocard you use for Instacart. Halocard is a US-issued Visa credit card that gives you a separate card for each merchant, and locking one takes a couple of clicks in your Halocard dashboard. Instacart can't charge that card again until you unlock it, so you stay in full control even when cancelling is slow or hard to find. To cancel with Instacart as well, sign in to your Instacart account and cancel the plan in its billing or subscription settings.
Does Instacart accept EBT?
Yes, at participating stores, if the state that issued your EBT card takes part in the SNAP Online Purchasing Pilot. Instacart accepts SNAP and SUN Bucks but not EBT cash. You can save one EBT card, and you must also add a credit or debit card for fees, taxes, tips and items EBT cannot buy.
Does Instacart accept PayPal?
Yes. Add it under Settings, then Payment methods, and log in to PayPal. Only one PayPal account can be linked, and PayPal cannot pay for prescriptions, CBD or THC products, or alcohol. PayPal Pay Later is also offered for orders of $10 or more.
Does Instacart take Afterpay?
No. Instacart's buy now, pay later options are Klarna, which splits an order into 4 interest-free payments every 2 weeks, and PayPal Pay Later. Neither is available on Groceries Powered by Instacart.
Does Instacart take Cash App?
Yes. Add Cash App under Settings, then Payment methods, and link it in the Cash App app. It cannot pay for Instacart+ subscriptions or restaurant orders powered by Uber Eats, so use a card for those.
Why did Instacart charge me more than my order total?
The pending amount is usually a temporary authorization hold, which can be higher than the order to cover added items, replacements and weighted items. The final total can also change after a pricier replacement, heavier produce or a tip increase, which shows on the receipt as an Additional Charge or an Adjustment Charge.
