Tips for successful payments at Spotify

  • AcceptedStarting a free trial? Give the card to Spotify directly. A plan billed through a third party such as your phone provider does not qualify for the trial.
  • AcceptedIf a partner such as your phone or internet provider bills your plan, cancel with that partner first. Add a card on spotify.com only once the account has switched to Free.
  • AcceptedPaying with PayPal? The PayPal account must be verified and set to the same country as your Spotify account.
  • AcceptedEnter the billing name and address exactly as they appear on your Halocard.

Why do Spotify payments decline?

The card is registered in a different country from your Spotify account
Spotify checks that the payment method and the account share a country. Set the Spotify account country to match the card, then enter the card again.
The card is not enabled for foreign, online or recurring purchases
Spotify asks for a card that allows foreign, secure online and recurring purchases. Check those settings with the card issuer, then retry.
The payment still fails after you check the details
Enter the card again in a private or incognito window, wait a few hours in case it was a connection problem, or try another payment method.
A monthly renewal did not go through
You keep Premium for now while Spotify retries over the next few days. Update the card under Payment methods before the retries run out.

Spotify payment FAQ

How do I change my payment method on Spotify?
Go to Payment methods on your account page, select Add or Change, then confirm. Spotify may place a small temporary authorization charge to check the new card. If a partner such as your phone provider bills you, Spotify says to cancel with that partner first and sign up again once the account switches to Free. See How to change your payment details.
Why did my Spotify payment fail?
Check your payment history for the reason first. Spotify's Failed payment help lists the usual causes: not enough funds, a card registered in a different country from the account, an expired or canceled card, or a card not enabled for foreign, secure online and recurring purchases.
Does Spotify accept PayPal?
Yes. Premium can be paid with PayPal. The country on your PayPal account must match the country set in your Spotify account, and the PayPal account must be verified. See PayPal payments for Spotify.
Can I use a prepaid card for Spotify?
Not for a free trial. Spotify's Paid Subscription Terms say prepaid cards and Spotify gift cards are not valid forms of payment for a trial, and that closed loop prepaid cards cannot pay for household plans. The terms describe those as cards that are not credit or bank cards.
Can I pay for Spotify with Apple Pay?
Spotify does not list Apple Pay as a way to pay. The full list of methods for your country appears after you pick a plan at spotify.com/premium. Premium cannot be bought in the iPhone app, so add a card on the website.
