Choose a plan at HBOMax.com
Pick Basic with Ads, Standard or Premium, billed monthly or yearly, and enter the card when HBO Max asks for payment. Listed prices exclude tax, which is added based on your billing ZIP code.

Open Subscription, then Payment Method
On a phone or tablet, go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in. On a computer, sign in at HBOMax.com, choose your profile, then Subscription. Choose Payment Method, add the card details and save your changes.

No Payment Method option? Check who bills you
The top of the Subscription screen names who bills you. If it is Amazon, Roku, Samsung, Apple, Google Play or a TV or internet provider, change the payment method with that company instead.

Tips for successful payments at HBO Max
- AcceptedSubscribe at HBOMax.com or in the HBO Max app. New subscriptions started on an iPhone or Android phone are now billed by HBO Max directly, not by Apple or Google Play.
- AcceptedSwitch to an Adult profile before you open Subscription. Only Adult profiles can manage the subscription and its payment method.
- AcceptedUpdate the card before your next billing date, shown under Subscription. A new payment method is used from the next subscription charge.
- AcceptedEnter the billing name and address exactly as they appear on your Halocard.
Why do HBO Max payments decline?
- Payment details do not match the card
- Check that everything you enter matches the card. For a credit or debit card, the ZIP code and state must match the card's billing address. Correct them and save again.
- The payment form will not accept the card
- Try another supported browser (Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge or Safari) or a private window, then sign in at HBOMax.com/subscription and choose Payment Method again. Switching between a computer and a phone can also help.
- The card does not support recurring payments
- HBO Max needs a payment method that supports recurring online payments, and says some prepaid cards do not. Use a card that does, or ask your bank why the payment is failing.

How do I change my payment method on HBO Max?
Go to HBOMax.com/subscription on a phone or tablet, or sign in at HBOMax.com on a computer and choose your profile, then Subscription. Choose Payment Method, add your details and save. The new method is used for your next charge. If there is no Payment Method option, the top of the screen shows the app store or provider that bills you, and you change it with them.
Does HBO Max have gift cards?
No. HBO Max's help center says it does not have HBO Max gift cards at this time. On HBOMax.com you pay with Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, JCB, PayPal or Apple Pay.
Can I get a refund from HBO Max?
It depends on who bills you. HBO Max has a no refund policy for subscriptions it bills directly, but asks you to contact it about an unexpected charge. Apple, Google Play, Amazon and Roku follow their own refund policies. To avoid the next charge, cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date.
Why is my HBO Max charge higher than the plan price?
Tax is added based on your billing ZIP code. New subscribers can also see an authorization hold next to the first charge, which should drop off within 7 to 10 days. The Extra Member Add-On and pay-per-view events are billed separately, and a promotional price ends at the standard rate.
Can I pay for HBO Max through Apple or Google Play?
Not for a new subscription. Apple billing ended for new and returning subscribers on March 9, 2026, and Google billing on April 20, 2026, so subscriptions started on those devices are billed by HBO Max. Existing Apple-billed or Google-billed subscriptions carry on, and their card is changed in your Apple Account or Google Play. Apple Pay is accepted at HBOMax.com.
