Tips for successful payments at Venmo

  • AcceptedAdd a card registered in your own name. Venmo allows cards in the account holder's name only.
  • AcceptedKeep a card slot free. Every card you add counts toward Venmo's limit of 4 for 6 months, even after you delete it.
  • AcceptedIf your Venmo balance covers the payment, Venmo uses it first and you cannot pick a card. Pay from the card when the balance is lower than the amount.
  • AcceptedFor online checkouts, pick the card for each merchant under Me, Settings, Connected business, and set it as your Backup Payment too.

Venmo payment FAQ

Can you use a credit card on Venmo?
Yes. Venmo lets you add Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express credit cards in your name from the Wallet section. Sending money to a Venmo account with a credit card has a 3% fee, and your card issuer may add a cash advance fee. Purchases from authorized merchants carry no Venmo fee, even with a credit card.
How much is the Venmo credit card fee?
Venmo's fees page sets it at 3% when you send money to a Venmo account with a credit card. Online purchases have no fee, and payments to a business profile are exempt from the 3% fee. Some card providers also treat payments to friends as cash advances, with their own fees and a higher APR.
Does Venmo accept prepaid cards?
Yes. Venmo's Bank Accounts and Cards FAQ lists prepaid cards alongside Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express, as long as the card is registered in your name. Some cards need a ZIP code to link, and the issuer or Venmo may decline a card for funds availability or fraud prevention reasons.
Does the buyer pay a fee for goods and services on Venmo?
No. The seller pays: 2.99% on a personal account payment marked as goods and services, or 1.9% plus 10 cents on a business profile. A buyer paying a business profile with a credit card is exempt from the 3% credit card fee. Payments marked as goods and services or sent to a business profile can qualify for Venmo Purchase Protection.
Why is my Venmo payment declined?
Venmo's Payment Declined article gives two causes: your bank or card issuer declined the transaction, or the payment triggered one of Venmo's automated security flags. Follow the error message, try a different bank account or card, or add money to your Venmo balance and pay from that. If nothing works, try again later.
