Tips for successful payments at United Airlines

  • AcceptedTo buy food, drinks or Wi-Fi on board, save a card before you fly: at check-in, in your MileagePlus account or in the United app wallet. You can add it up until takeoff.
  • AcceptedSave the card in a name you can confirm. The flight attendant may ask you to confirm the name on the card you have on file.
  • AcceptedPay the whole booking with one method when you choose PayPal. PayPal cannot be combined with other cards, TravelBank, travel credits or gift certificates.
  • AcceptedA card saved at check-in covers that trip only and is removed within 12 hours of arrival. Save it to your MileagePlus account to use it on future flights.

Why do United Airlines payments decline?

"We don't accept cards or cash for inflight payments"
Save a card in your MileagePlus account, the United app wallet or your reservation before takeoff, or use Tap to Pay with a digital wallet. Tap to Pay needs Wi-Fi and is unavailable on United Express flights.
PayPal will not combine with travel credits
United does not let PayPal be used with other cards, TravelBank credits, travel credits or gift certificates. Pay the full amount with a card instead, alongside the credit.
Booking cancelled as fraudulent
United reserves the right to cancel bookings it deems fraudulent or booked with no intention of flying. Book in the traveler's real name with accurate details, and contact United if a booking is cancelled.
Ticket not issued after checkout
United issues a ticket only once the fare is paid. If a payment fails, the reservation has no ticket yet, so pay again with a card that covers the full fare.

United Airlines payment FAQ

What should I do if United Airlines declines or doesn't support my card?
Pay with a Halocard instead. United Airlines accepts it, and as a US-issued Visa credit card held in US dollars it is accepted at checkouts that are strict about card type or country. Halocard is available for customers in the US and 120+ countries, so check that your country is supported, then make a card for United Airlines in minutes. See the countries Halocard supports.
Can I use a virtual card for United Airlines?
Yes. United Airlines accepts Halocard, a US-issued Visa credit card that works like a debit card. Make a card just for United Airlines and you are in full control: set a limit, lock it or cancel it whenever you like, without ever handing United Airlines your bank card.
Can I keep my real card and address private from United Airlines?
Yes. United Airlines only ever sees your Halocard, never your bank card. You choose the cardholder name and billing address on each card, so your home address stays out of United Airlines' records. If United Airlines is ever caught up in a data breach, cancel that one card and make a new one in seconds.
Does United Airlines accept PayPal?
Yes. PayPal pays for flights, award travel, upgrades, miles and travel fees on united.com, and for flights in the United app. PayPal can charge your bank account, credit card or PayPal balance. It cannot be combined with other credit cards, TravelBank credits, travel credits or gift certificates.
Can I pay for a United flight in monthly installments?
Yes, with Flex Pay, United's payment plan partner. Choose Flex Pay at checkout and complete a short application on the payment page. If approved, you pay monthly and can travel before the trip is paid off. Loans are made through Flex Pay by Upgrade, with APRs from 0% to 36%, a $49 minimum purchase and a possible down payment.
Can I pay with United travel credits?
Yes. United accepts United travel credits, TravelBank and UATP for tickets, seats and upgrades on united.com and in the United app. You can pay the rest with a card. PayPal is the exception: it cannot be combined with travel credits or TravelBank.
What is the UA INFLT charge on my card?
UA INFLT is United's descriptor for purchases made on board, such as food, drinks and Wi-Fi. It may also print as UNITED AIR INFLT, and some Wi-Fi purchases show as UNITED WI-FI. Inflight charges are often batched and can post 3 to 7 days after the flight. Tickets and fees usually show as UNITED*.
Does United Airlines accept Apple Pay?
Yes, in the United app for tickets, seats and upgrades. On board, you can use Tap to Pay with Apple Pay or another digital wallet when Wi-Fi is available, except on United Express flights.
