Tips for successful payments at Booking.com

  • AcceptedRead the payment policy before you book. It says whether Booking.com or the property charges your card, and whether a prepayment is taken at booking.
  • AcceptedOn a booking set to pay online closer to check-in, keep the card active with enough funds. Booking.com charges it automatically shortly before you arrive.
  • AcceptedPaying with someone else's card is allowed with their permission. Put the cardholder's name and that permission in the Special requests box when you book.
  • AcceptedWhen the property prices in another currency, look for Pay In Your Own Currency at checkout. Booking.com shows its conversion rate before you pay.

Why do Booking.com payments decline?

The property marked your card as invalid
Booking.com sends an email and a text asking for new card details. Reply within 24 hours, or 12 hours if you booked within 48 hours of check-in, or the property can cancel.
Booking.com could not validate your card
On some pay at the property bookings, Booking.com checks the card before your stay. If it fails, you get 24 hours to replace the card before the property can cancel.
A scheduled prepayment did not go through
Check that the card details are correct and that enough money is available on the payment date. If the balance cannot be collected, the property may cancel without notice.
The rental counter refused the car
The main driver needs a credit card in their own name with enough funds for the security deposit. If refused, call Booking.com from the counter to cancel and get a partial refund.

Booking.com payment FAQ

Does Booking.com accept PayPal?
Yes, on many bookings. PayPal is offered when Booking.com takes the payment online for the property, alongside Apple Pay, Google Pay and pay later options. Not every property offers online payment, so look for the Pay Now option on the Final Details page. On pay at the property bookings, you pay the property with the methods it accepts.
When does Booking.com charge your card?
It depends on the payment option. Pay online now charges you when you book. Pay online closer to check-in charges the card automatically shortly before arrival. On pay at the property bookings, the property usually charges you at check-in or check-out, unless its policy asks for a prepayment. Your confirmation email states who charges you and when.
Can I pay at the property on Booking.com?
Yes, when the property offers it. You do not pay when you book, but most properties still need a valid credit card to guarantee the reservation. You then pay the property on arrival or at check-out with a method it accepts, such as cash, debit or credit card. A few properties guarantee bookings without a card.
Can I pay later on Booking.com with Klarna or Affirm?
Sometimes. Klarna, Affirm and PayPal Credit are among the pay later options Booking.com can offer when it takes the payment for a property. Availability differs by country and property type. Many properties also let you pay online closer to check-in, or pay at the property instead.
Why did Booking.com charge my card?
It is usually one of two things. A pre-authorization is a validity check that blocks roughly the cost of the stay and is released later. A deposit or prepayment is a real charge that some properties take at booking, and it is refunded if you cancel within the free cancellation period. Booking.com's Customer Service can help with payment questions.
