Official payment guidance from Airbnb

Tips for successful payments at Airbnb

  • AcceptedAdd and confirm the card under Account settings, then Payments, before you book. A card Airbnb has not confirmed cannot be used to finish a reservation.
  • AcceptedPick the right card before you click Confirm and pay. Once a reservation is paid in full, Airbnb cannot move the charge to another payment method.
  • AcceptedPay the full total with one method. Airbnb does not split a paid-in-full booking across several payment methods.
  • AcceptedOn Pay Part Now, Part Later, keep the card active until the second payment. Airbnb emails a reminder 3 days before each scheduled charge.

Why do Airbnb payments decline?

"Postal code must match your bank's records"
Check the card number, CVV and billing address and enter them exactly as the card issuer has them, then try again.
"Looks like your bank declined the payment"
This appears when the bank's authentication check is failed or closed. Book again and finish the Confirm your card screen.
"account_volume_limit"
The payment is over the card's transaction or daily limit. Make sure the card covers the full reservation total, or pay with another method.
"You have reached your Airbnb access quota"
Airbnb's systems flagged unusual activity on the account. Wait up to 24 hours, log in again and retry the payment.

Airbnb payment FAQ

Does Airbnb accept PayPal?
Yes. PayPal is on Airbnb's list of payment options available in most countries, with major credit cards, debit cards that process as credit, Apple Pay and Google Pay. PayPal also works with Airbnb's scheduled payment options, Pay Part Now, Part Later and Reserve Now, Pay Later.
Can you pay for Airbnb later?
Yes, on eligible stays. Reserve Now, Pay Later lets you book with nothing due and pay the full amount before check-in, and Pay Part Now, Part Later splits the total into two payments. Both need a check-in at least 14 days away, a stay under 28 nights and a total of $50 or more. Experiences and monthly stays are not eligible.
How does Klarna work on Airbnb?
Klarna lets eligible guests pay over time, in 4 interest-free payments every 2 weeks or monthly with a loan where interest may apply. The first payment is charged when the booking is confirmed. Klarna takes most debit and credit cards but not prepaid cards, and its monthly plans cannot be paid with a credit card. It is not offered for monthly stays or Experiences.
When does Airbnb charge your card?
Airbnb places a hold for the full reservation amount when you book. If the reservation is accepted, the hold becomes a charge up to 24 hours later. If a request is declined or expires, the hold drops off or shows as a refund, which can take up to 7 business days. Scheduled payments are charged on the dates shown at checkout.
Does Airbnb accept debit cards?
Yes, debit cards that can be processed as credit cards, on the same list as Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB. Debit cards also qualify for Airbnb's scheduled payment options, and Klarna takes most debit cards for its pay in 4 plans.
