Tips for successful payments at Nintendo

  • AcceptedSave the card from an adult Nintendo Account. Users under 18 cannot save a card, and an account holds only one saved card at a time.
  • AcceptedChanging the saved card also changes the card used for Nintendo Switch Online auto-renewal, so update it in one place when you switch cards.
  • AcceptedAdd funds in amounts that keep your Nintendo eShop balance at or under $800, the most it can hold.
  • AcceptedFor a Nintendo Switch Online family membership, Nintendo requires a credit card or PayPal as the auto-renewal method, even when you pay with eShop funds.

Why do Nintendo payments decline?

"This credit card cannot be used as its issuing country is not among those compatible with this Nintendo eShop."
Set your Nintendo Account country to match the card's billing address, then re-enter the card details, including the ZIP code.
"There was an issue processing your transaction. Contact your card issuer or select a different payment option."
Check that the card has enough available for the full amount and retry. Nintendo does not give the specific reason, so ask the card issuer if it fails again.
"Unable to use credit card"
Nintendo says this usually means a temporary outage or heavy traffic. Install the latest system update, wait and try again, or buy the same item in the Nintendo Store on the website.
A pending charge after a failed purchase
A declined attempt, often from an incorrect billing address, can leave a pending hold. The card was not charged, and the bank releases the hold, usually within 1 to 3 days.

Nintendo payment FAQ

Does the Nintendo eShop accept PayPal?
Yes. Link a PayPal account to your Nintendo Account, then choose PayPal under Add Funds or at checkout. It is open to account owners aged 18 or older in North America, and it can also pay for a Nintendo Switch Online membership and its auto-renewal.
Can you use a Visa gift card on the Nintendo eShop?
Yes. Nintendo accepts Visa and Mastercard gift cards, and Discover, alongside credit and debit cards. Nintendo says a prepaid Visa, Mastercard or Discover card must be registered with the bank that issued it first, and saving a prepaid card to your account may not be available.
How do I add funds to the Nintendo eShop?
Open Nintendo eShop, select your icon in the upper-right corner and choose Add Funds. Pay with a credit card or PayPal, or select Enter Code to redeem the 16-character code from a Nintendo eShop Card. Your balance cannot go above $800.
How do My Nintendo Gold Points work at checkout?
Gold Points can be redeemed toward the price of digital games and DLC. The rate depends on the currency the points were earned in. The rest of the price comes from your Nintendo eShop balance, which you can top up with a card, PayPal or a Nintendo eShop Card.
Does Nintendo Switch Online renew automatically?
Yes. Memberships are set to auto-renew. Nintendo takes the renewal from eShop funds no sooner than 48 hours before expiry and charges any shortfall to the card or PayPal you chose. Turn off auto-renewal at least 48 hours before expiry in the eShop or at accounts.nintendo.com. Once off, it cannot be turned back on.
