What merchant category (MCC) is MoonPay?

6051Non-financial institutions: foreign currency, money orders, crypto and quasi-cash: Crypto and quasi-cash purchases are classified as high-risk purchases by Visa and our issuing bank, so payments to merchants in this category will be declined by Halocard. See Halocard's merchant restrictions.

What is Halocard?

A US-issued Visa credit card that works like a debit card, with a separate virtual card for each merchant you pay. Set a spending limit, lock a card or cancel it from the dashboard at any time.

It cannot be used at MoonPay, but works wherever Visa is accepted outside the high-risk categories that are unsupported.

Why Halocard cannot be used at MoonPay

MoonPay is charged under the crypto and quasi-cash purchases category, which Visa and our issuing bank classify as high-risk, so Halocard declines payments to it on every card. This is a Halocard rule, not a MoonPay rule.

What you can do instead

Pay with a Visa, Mastercard or Discover card from your own bank, after checking that your bank allows crypto purchases.
Use Apple Pay or Google Pay with a card from your own bank, where your bank supports them for this kind of payment.
Pay with PayPal, Venmo, Cash App or Revolut.
Buy from a MoonPay Balance you have topped up.

Tips for successful payments at MoonPay

Can I buy crypto on MoonPay with PayPal?

Yes. PayPal is one of MoonPay's payment methods for buying crypto, and the payment goes through instantly. Venmo and Cash App are offered too. MoonPay's supported payment methods page shows which countries each method covers.

Can I use a credit card on MoonPay?

Yes. MoonPay takes Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and Discover credit and debit cards, and card purchases are instant. Card payments are verified with 3D Secure, so your bank may ask you to approve the payment. Some banks refuse crypto purchases under their own rules, so ask your bank first if a card payment fails.

What is the minimum purchase on MoonPay?

The smallest crypto purchase on MoonPay is $20, or the same amount in another currency. Your card's own daily or monthly limit also applies, and your bank will turn down a purchase above it.

Why was my MoonPay card payment declined?

MoonPay names three common causes: your bank's risk rules on crypto purchases, an unfinished 3D Secure check, and an amount above your card's limit. Contact your bank, complete any 3D Secure prompt, or try another card. A pending amount after a failed purchase is a pre-authorization hold, which your bank releases, usually the same day and sometimes up to 10 business days later.
