Chime review

US everyday banking, with one virtual card

Chime is a legitimate US fintech, not a bank: a free checking account and Visa debit card provided by FDIC-member partner banks, and a good fit for US residents who want everyday banking with direct deposit and no monthly fee.

Halocard is the better choice if what you want is virtual cards: a separate Visa credit card for each merchant, each with its own limit, for customers in the US and 120+ countries. Chime charges no monthly fee and no foreign transaction fee, pays direct deposits up to two days early, and gives fee-free cash at 47,000+ ATMs. Every account comes with one virtual card, which you can freeze or replace but not limit, and freezing it doesn't stop recurring payments. Chime is for US citizens and legal residents with a Social Security number, for personal use only. It is rated 3.5/5 on Trustpilot from 13,858 reviews, where the main complaints are denied disputes over unauthorized charges and support that is hard to reach. Halocard is a US-issued Visa credit card for customers in the US and 120+ countries, with a billing address you choose on every card.

What Chime reviewers report

Rated 3.5/5 on Trustpilot from 13,858 reviews. The most common complaints:

Unauthorized charge claims denied

Users report claims for unauthorized charges denied, even after an appeal.

Chime will not investigate unauthorized tranaction; no other banks denied disputes.

“I filed a dispute immediately that was denied. I made two appeals and submitted more information, including reviews of errors and omissions with what little support documentation.”

Trustpilot review, 9 October 2026

We've been with Chime for several…

“Recently, my husband's account was hacked, and $115 was transferred without his authorization. Chime claimed they investigated the situation, transferred him from one representative to another, and ultimately denied his dispute.”

Trustpilot review, 9 October 2026

Hard to reach a person

Complaints about support that pushes everything to email and calls that end without help.

Chime customer support is not responsive to people who need to speak to a real person

“They want to do everything by email. To talk to a real person is like pulling teeth.”

Trustpilot review, 26 August 2026

Customer support is useless

“Long story short, I was hung up on.”

Trustpilot review, 26 September 2026

Advance limits cut suddenly

Reviews state MyPay advance limits were cut with no change in their deposits.

Unreliable MyPay limits & deceptive…

“Nothing about my income, account standing, or deposit schedule changed. … Chime’s algorithm-driven limit changes are unpredictable, dishonest, and make it impossible to rely on them for financial planning.”

Trustpilot review, 11 September 2026

Chime was okay at first

“My mypay I worked on getting a higher limit was dropped to 580 which was crazy because I pay it early and I’m never late on anything!!! … And my deposit amounts increased not decreased”

Chime FAQ

Is Chime safe?

Yes. Chime is a real US financial technology company, Chime Financial, Inc., founded in 2012 and listed on Nasdaq. It is not a bank: its accounts and cards are provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., both members of the FDIC. It is rated 3.5/5 on Trustpilot from 13,858 reviews.

Is Chime a real bank?

No. Chime says it is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services and cards are provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., and each member's account sits with one of the two; the app shows which.

Is Chime FDIC insured?

Chime itself is not FDIC-insured, but deposits are insured up to $250,000 through its partner banks, which are FDIC members. Chime notes that conditions have to be met for pass-through insurance to apply. Its debit cards carry Visa's Zero Liability Policy for unauthorized use.

Does Chime have a virtual card?

Yes. Every Chime checking account comes with a virtual debit card you can use straight away: online, for recurring payments, and in Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. If you also hold the Chime Card, you get a virtual version of that too.

How do I find my Chime virtual card number?

In the Chime app, go to your profile, open Cards and tap Show number to see the card number, expiry date and CVV. On a new or unrecognised device, Chime hides the card details for a time.

Can I get more than one Chime virtual card?

No. Chime gives one virtual card for each card account, and says it issues one debit card per checking account and no secondary cards. You can replace the virtual number once every 24 hours; the old number stops working when you do.

Is the Chime virtual card a temporary card?

It used to be called one. Chime's help centre now calls it simply a virtual card, lists it alongside the physical card, and says you can't opt out of it. You can replace its number, but Chime describes no expiry tied to the physical card arriving.

Does freezing a Chime card stop subscriptions?

No. Chime's help centre says freezing a card doesn't stop recurring payments: they can still go through on a frozen card. To stop one, Chime asks you to contact it at least three business days before the next payment, and says a stop payment doesn't guarantee every future charge will stop.

Does Chime charge fees?

Chime has no monthly fee, no minimum balance, no overdraft fee and no foreign transaction fee. It charges $2.50 at ATMs outside its network or abroad, on top of the operator's fee, 1.75% to move money out instantly, and a metal Chime Card costs up to $50. Cash deposits are free at Walgreens and Duane Reade, and typically $3 to $5 at other retailers.

Who can open a Chime account?

US citizens and legal residents aged 18 or over, with a Social Security number, a US mobile number and a US residential address. Chime doesn't run a credit check for a checking account, accepts US-issued ID such as a driver's license, passport or permanent resident card, and doesn't offer business accounts.

Can I use Chime outside the US?

You can spend with a Chime card in most countries where Visa is accepted, with no foreign transaction fee, but you need to be a US citizen or legal resident to open an account. Cash withdrawals abroad cost $2.50 each, plus the ATM operator's fee.

Does Chime build credit?

The checking account and debit card don't. The Chime Card, its secured Visa credit card, does: Chime reports your payment history to Experian, TransUnion and Equifax at the start of each month. It has no annual fee and no credit check to apply.

Does Chime have cashback?

On the Chime Card, for members with qualifying direct deposits: 2% with Chime Plus status and 5% with Chime Prime, in one category you choose, on up to $1,500 of purchases a month. Without those deposits it earns none.

Does Chime work with Apple Pay and Google Pay?

Yes. Chime's virtual and physical cards can be added to Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.
