Tips for successful payments at Pirate Ship

  • AcceptedA ship-from address in the country. Pirate Ship does not sell postage for shipments that start in Canada or any other country.
  • AcceptedA card in your own name or your business's. Pirate Ship says paying with a recipient's card can put a hold on your account.
  • AcceptedA payment method on file even if you prepay your Account Balance. Labels come out of the balance first, but Pirate Ship still requires a card, bank account, PayPal or Venmo on the account.
  • AcceptedExpect follow-up charges. Carrier adjustments and returned payments can be charged to any payment method you have ever added to your account.

Why do Pirate Ship payments decline?

An error such as "Unexpected Error Log-ID" or "Response is neither JSON nor XML" when you buy a label
No label is made, so you are not charged. Any pending hold drops off within 24 hours. Duplicate the shipment and buy again, and contact Support if it keeps failing.
The card on file has expired
Purchases with an expired card do not go through. Add a current card under Settings, then Payment Method, and buy the label again.

Pirate Ship payment FAQ

What should I do if Pirate Ship declines or doesn't support my card?
Pay with a Halocard instead. Pirate Ship accepts it, and as a US-issued Visa credit card held in US dollars it is accepted at checkouts that are strict about card type or country. Halocard is available for customers in the US and 120+ countries, so check that your country is supported, then make a card for Pirate Ship in minutes. See the countries Halocard supports.
Can I use a virtual card for Pirate Ship?
Yes. Pirate Ship accepts Halocard, a US-issued Visa credit card that works like a debit card. Halocard has already processed 500+ transactions at Pirate Ship. Make a card just for Pirate Ship and you are in full control: set a limit, lock it or cancel it whenever you like, without ever handing Pirate Ship your bank card.
Can I keep my real card and address private from Pirate Ship?
Yes, with Halocard. Halocard is a US-issued Visa credit card that gives you a separate card for each merchant, so Pirate Ship only ever sees your Halocard, never your bank card. You choose the cardholder name and billing address on each card, so your home address stays out of Pirate Ship's records. If Pirate Ship is ever caught up in a data breach, cancel that one card and make a new one in seconds.
How do I pay Pirate Ship with PayPal?
Go to Settings, then Payment Method, and click Add New. Choose Pay a different way, then Pay with PayPal. You can pay per label or load credit ahead of time. See Can I pay for postage with PayPal?.
Why did Pirate Ship charge my card $1?
When a label costs less than $1 more than your Account Balance, Pirate Ship charges $1, the minimum its payment processor can charge. The leftover stays in your balance for later labels or a refund. See Why did I get a $1 charge on my card?.
Can I get my Pirate Ship balance refunded to my card?
Yes. Open the Reports page, find Account Balance and click Refund Credit. You can refund up to what you have spent with that card on Pirate Ship. Refunds usually take 3 to 7 business days. See Can I get my account balance refunded?.
