Why do Freelancer.com payments decline?

Too little money for the deposit and the processing fee
Card deposits carry a fee of $0.30 USD plus 2.3% on top of the amount. Make sure the card covers the deposit plus that fee, then add funds again.
Card details entered wrong
Check the card number, expiry date and security code on the deposit page, then try again.
Card verification test charge stopped
Adding a card runs a small test charge that must clear as an online transaction. Check the card has room for it and is enabled for online purchases, or ask the card issuer to authorize it.
Authentication amount entered wrong
You have three tries within 88 hours to enter the exact amount. After a failed attempt, Freelancer.com offers card image authentication instead: photos of the front and back of a card in your name, reviewed in 1 to 2 business days.

Freelancer.com payment FAQ

What should I do if Freelancer.com declines or doesn't support my card?
Pay with a Halocard instead. Freelancer.com accepts it, and as a US-issued Visa credit card held in US dollars it is accepted at checkouts that are strict about card type or country. Halocard is available for customers in the US and 120+ countries, so check that your country is supported, then make a card for Freelancer.com in minutes. See the countries Halocard supports.
Can I use a virtual card for Freelancer.com?
Yes. Freelancer.com accepts Halocard, a US-issued Visa credit card that works like a debit card. Make a card just for Freelancer.com and you are in full control: set a limit, lock it or cancel it whenever you like, without ever handing Freelancer.com your bank card.
How do I stop Freelancer.com charging me after I cancel?
The fastest way is to lock the Halocard you use for Freelancer.com. It takes a couple of clicks in your Halocard dashboard, and Freelancer.com can't charge that card again until you unlock it, so you stay in full control even when cancelling is slow or hard to find. To cancel with Freelancer.com as well, sign in to your Freelancer.com account and cancel the plan in its billing or subscription settings.
Can I keep my real card and address private from Freelancer.com?
Yes. Freelancer.com only ever sees your Halocard, never your bank card. You choose the cardholder name and billing address on each card, so your home address stays out of Freelancer.com's records. If Freelancer.com is ever caught up in a data breach, cancel that one card and make a new one in seconds.
Does Freelancer.com accept PayPal?
Yes. PayPal and credit or debit cards are the two main deposit options, and you can also verify a PayPal account as your payment method under Payment & Financials. The PayPal account needs a linked card or bank account with enough money. PayPal deposits carry the same $0.30 USD plus 2.3% fee as cards.
What fees does Freelancer.com charge clients?
A fixed price project costs 3% or $3.00 USD, whichever is greater, charged when you award it. Hourly projects carry 3% on each payment to the freelancer. Deposits by card, PayPal or Skrill add $0.30 USD plus 2.3%, a local bank deposit is free and an international wire costs $15.00 USD. You can cancel an awarded project within seven days for a full refund of the fee.
Does it cost anything to verify a payment method?
Verifying is free, though some card gateways add a small fee that is refunded automatically in 2 to 3 business days. Verifying a card or PayPal account also creates a billing agreement, which pays Milestone Payments, project and bid upgrades, project fees and membership renewals automatically.
How do Freelancer.com membership payments work?
The Basic, Plus, Professional and Premier plans are billed monthly or yearly, and paying yearly saves up to 20%. Memberships can be paid by credit or debit card, PayPal or Skrill. A plan renews automatically on its end date unless you cancel it, and it renews even when your balance is short, leaving a negative balance.
How do Milestone Payments work?
After you award a project, create a Milestone Payment from the project's Payments tab, your chat with the freelancer or the Financial Dashboard. It is funded from your account balance, your billing agreement or the payment option you choose. Freelancer.com holds the money until you release it to the freelancer.
